Togo VS Algeria 2-0
A clinical defensive play coupled with many counterattacks led Togo to a 2-0 victory over Algeria who become the first side to be eliminated from the Orange Africa cup of nations 2013 in South Africa.
The Fennecs had a good start to the game with star player, Feghouli appearing very active. In the 31st minute, Emmanuel Adebayor broke the deadlock for Togo. A beautiful header by Salifou freed Adebayor who made no mistake with a low first time finish 1-0. Algerians failed to take their numerous chances but one quick attack from Togo was enough to breach them. The second half was left to determine everything. In the second segment, Algeria were still the better side, looking far more structured and composed. The Sparrows looked surprised whenever they got the ball in the opposition half. A half chance fell to Algeria in the 53rd when Soudani got his head to a cross in Togo’s area. Nibombe showed good composure at the back earlier to thwart another Algeria move. Ball possession in the 68th was 63% for Algeria and 37% for Togo. There was frustration for Halilhodzic’s side as more chances continued go begging. Five minutes after regular time, the match was suspended for a while due to a problem with the goalposts. They were quickly mended and 13 minutes of extra time were given just for the Hawks to benefit from another counterattack as Wome was slipped in towards goal and placed his finish perfectly under Algeria’s goalkeeper.
The Algerians finally had the stuffing completely knocked out of them as they could not get any luck going their way. Togo’s 2-0 win implies that Algeria are out and Ivory Coast through. The hawks and Tunisia will then battle for the second spot in group D.

Last Tuesday in their opening match, Togo fell to Ivory Coast 1-2 and Algeria were defeated 0-1 by Tunisia. This evening match is a must win as the losers would see themselves doomed for elimination. In case of a draw between Ivory Coast and Tunisia who play earlier, the situation will be less crucial for the Fennecs and the hawks. While acknowledging the critical state of today match in a recent interview, Algeria coach, VAhid Hallilhodzic revealed his team’s determination to break the deadlock and move forward. “We have to look for two victories. We’re going to do everything to win because the only solution is victory” Halihodzix said. Togo tactician, Didier six is not less positive as he believes they are good enough to go to the quarterfinal no matter what obstacle they face. Kick off time for tonight match is 12h00, South Africa time at Rustenburg.
